West Silver Valley residents could get new wood stoves

November 1, 2018
West Silver Valley residents might be eligible for a woodstove change out through the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality West Silver Valley Woodstove Changeout Program at little to no cost.

To be eligible, homeowners must live in the West Silver Valley Nonattainment Area, which runs from Cataldo east to Big Creek and includes the communities of Kingston, Smelterville, Pinehurst and Kellogg. Homeowners will work with DEQ and a local vendor to replace their old woodstove with a new, EPA-certified woodstove, gas stove or pellet stove.

DEQ replaced 85 woodstoves in the West Silver Valley during the 2018-2019 application period and has funding for 100 more replacements through September 2020. The funding is part of the West Silver Valley Targeted Airshed Grant aimed to improve air quality in the West Silver Valley, which was designated by EPA in 2015 as a nonattainment area for fine particulate pollution.

The deadline to apply is January 30, 2019. The application and additional information are available on DEQ’s website. Installations are expected to begin in March 2019.
